Garden Ideas No Comments »

Gardening is one great hobby to enjoy. Aside from the joy of seeing your flowers and plants thrive healthily in your backyard, you can also find many home gardening ideas and garden art to make your garden look amazing and refreshing to the eyes.

Imagine a great garden with waterfalls, with stone art and all those nice stepping-stones and other garden ornaments. Indeed, gardening is not just satisfying your senses wit the fresh environment of your garden but also a way to express your being artistic.

Hypertufa Garden Art

One amazing garden art that you can make in your garden is with the use of hypertufa. Hypertufa is an artificially made rock that is used as a substitute for the ‘tufa’ rock, which is a very good material for plants to grow and thrive because of its porosity.

However, the tufa rock has now become rare and expensive, thus the creation of hypertufa is an alternative.

One good thing about using hypertufa for your creative home gardening ideas is that, you can actually do it yourself and shape it according to what you want. You can make planters, troughs, pots, rocks, even hypertufa leaves and just any garden accent you want. You will just need Portland cement, peat moss and perlite, mix these ingredients with water and mold to your chosen size and shape and let it cure and dry for several days.

How A Positive Attitude, Family & Friends Might Help You Live Longer

Family Living No Comments »

Do you want to live longer? Most people do. We’ve all read hundreds of health tips that claim they can give us longer lives.  Although they may be beneficial, they aren’t always easy to follow.

Another key to extending our lifespan may be much simpler: having a positive attitude and sharing it with friends.

Helen Reichert’s Story

Helen Reichert has always been admired for her positive, upbeat attitude. Even when things were bad. She’s survived the loss of loved ones, illnesses, financial dilemmas, broken bones and most anything else you can think of. Through it all, she’s held on to her optimistic outlook. That could be part of the reason Helen is still active, happy and spry at the inspiring age of 109.

Over the years Helen has had several personal physicians.

Her latest, Dr. Mark Lachs, believes her positive attitude has a lot to do with her longevity. He calls it adaptive competence, the ability to “bounce back” from anything life throws at you. Dr. Lachs noticed Helen’s amazing ability to move on and stay positive, even in times of personal crisis. He thinks Helen owes her long life to good genes, positivity and a strong social network.

Ideas For A Summer Garden Landscape

Garden Ideas No Comments »

Landscape sounds rather splendid sort of Capability Brown stuff with great avenues of elms shading you from the summer sun – or was it Capability Brown who had all the great avenues cut down so that the grand houses had an uninterrupted view? You cant quite remember. Either way, it sounds rather grand and not really applicable to the 12 paces by 16 paces plot you are looking at. You could not be more wrong.

The landscaping of small areas are what separates the sheep from the goats (neither of which you want in your particular small area). It is the creation of a picture, a landscape, on however small a scale, that not only is a delight to look at, but makes you want to step straight into the frame and wander round this landscape.

This is what we are aiming at for the summer garden. Except that for a summer garden, there most definitely has to be a shady spot in which you can stop all this wandering round and sit down with a cool glass of beer or white wine. How do we do it?

Discover your Family History

Family Living No Comments »

Birth, marriage and death certificates can prove valuable when building your family tree. Each of these events will have played a significant role in your relative’s lives and can be used to effectively piece together the story of your family history.

In 1837 it became compulsory for all births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales to be recorded at the district register office.

In Scotland this type of registration was introduced in 1855 and Ireland followed suit in 1864 for the recording of births and deaths with marriages documented from 1845 onwards. To trace back any further than these dates you need access to parish records which are available from local churches or archives offices.

There are also websites specifically designed to help with researching your family tree, making it possible to complete the whole process from the comfort of your own home and giving you access to different sets of records, all at the touch of a button.

In England & Wales, there are two sets of birth, marriage and death indexes. The original sets are managed by local register offices whereas the secondary set of indexes is held by the General Register Office (GRO).
